Book Title: A Suitable Boy
Author: Vikram Seth
Length: 1,504 pages
Brief Description (back cover): Vikram Seth's novel is, at its core, a love story: the tale of Lata's - and her mother's - attempts to find a suitable boy, through love or through exacting maternal appraisal. At the same time, it is the story of India, newley independent and struggling through a time of crisis as a sixth of the world's population faces its first great General Election and the chance to map its own destiny.
Why I Recommend It: Vikram Seth gives a great description of what life is like in India for both Muslim and Hindu families. Prior to reading this book, I had very little knowledge of India politics, history, and traditions. The vast amount of characters, while at first is quite complex and difficult to keep track of, are each facing different situations in India. The author does a great job of describing their lives and linking them together. Overall, it’s an extremely long book, which could have probably been written in half the length, however, the amount of information that I learned from it made it worth the read.
Do I have a copy others can borrow: Yes
